New Walgreens in Hendersonville

Anyone who has driven down US 25 in Hendersonville, NC has seen the construction of the new Walgreens. The building has been sitting there completed for weeks, and we are just waiting for the Grand Opening. Well looks like we have to wait a little longer. According to a cashier I spoke with at the Arden store, May 15th is the goal for the Grand Opening.

An interesting fact about new stores:
When Walmart built their new store on Highland Square (geez has it really been almost 10 years ago already?) I learned that from the time the store takes occupancy (gets the keys and the construction guys are totally finished) it takes 6 weeks to set up the fixtures and get the stock in place for the grand opening.

Watch your mailbox

When I started couponing, I took a class, and one of the things that was covered is the use of prescription transfer coupons. I love doing this. I transfer my prescription from one place to the next and for doing so, the pharmacy I am transferring to gives me a gift card. I have seen coupons for anywhere from $10 to $35 in gift cards. Right now Rite Aid has a promo for 4 $25 cards for 4 transferred prescriptions. I will soon being doing this one.

A few months back I transferred from Walgreen's to CVS. Then I got a letter in the mail from Walgreen's with a check attached. $25.00 to transfer my prescription back to Walgreen's. Now I have a check to use for $25 in Walgreen's. My dilemma, what do I spend my $25 on. I wonder if there are any Pepsi deals coming up any time soon?

Possible changes at Walgreens

I currently have an email in to Walgreens Customer Support to try and get some answers.

I have been seeing more and more posts in the forums stating that Walgreens has changed their policy to only allow the use of 1 (one) coupon per item. This may mean an end to most of the Walgreens free or nearly free items.

Walgreens policy in the past was that they would accept their 'in advertisment/or Easy Saver(Monthly Coupon Book) - AND- a manufacturers coupon on any item.

My favorite example of this deal is their Garnier Fructis Shampoo and Conditioner.
Reg. Price 2.99
Easy Saver 2.00
_____________
Sale Price .99
Coupon 1.00

I sure hope that it isn't true--as this will cut my shopping at Walgreens in half!

Building a Staples List--And How to Use It

You will find that your staples list and your stock pile will work hand in hand. As you are making your Staples list (the items that you and your family use regularly), be sure to note if there are name brand items that you prefer to buy (due to allergies, or just because you like them better) as opposed to the off brands. With your staples list in hand, you will find yourself scouring the Sunday sales fliers looking for those items and seeing who has the best deal.

Your staples list will also be the starting point of your price comparison book. A price comparison book is a notebook or tablet that has your list of Staple items on it, along with the regular prices of those items from the stores where you shop most of the time. With this price book, you will easily be able to see where your best deals are for the everyday prices, and where your best sale price is.

Here is a very rough example:

On 7/1 xyz product is on sale for 3.50 at CVS, and 4.00 at Harris Teeter you have a .60 cpn for xyz product, and it is triples weekend at Harris Teeter

Walmart 32 oz. size
Reg Price 3.79
Sale Price n/a
Coupon -0.60
OPP 3.79 (.12 per ounce)

CVS 32 oz. size
Reg Price 3.89
Sale Price 3.50
Coupon -0.60
OPP 2.90 (.09 per ounce)

Ingles 16 oz. size
Reg Price 4.09
Sale Price n/a
Coupon -0.60
OPP 3.49 (.21 per ounce)

Walgreens 32 oz. size
Reg Price 3.99
Sale Price n/a
Coupon -0.60
OPP 3.39 (.11 per ounce)

Harris Teeter 16 oz. size
Reg Price 4.29
Sale Price 4.00
Coupon - 1.80
OPP 2.20 (.13 per ounce)

So by looking at your price book, you know that with Triples this week at Harris Teeter your best price is there.

Make sure that you are listing the prices of the like items, so you will have multiple listings for products that have different sizes.

Having this book also allows you to be able to see which sale has the best price per unit.

Price divided by the number of units (lbs, oz), so while the Harris Teeter is the best out of pocket price, the best price per ounce is CVS.

3/8 Deals Cont.

Sorry for the delay, Sinuses and Life got in the way.....lol

Store

Math

**Easy saver cpns come from a book that the store has at the front. Each month they put out a new book. The front half of the book has instant cpns (that you must present to the cashier to redeem), and the back half has rebates that you mail in and get credit to your gift card or a rebate check back.

Make sure to have other items to eat up the overage--these are called fillers (a candy bar, a drink,--usually something cheap)

Walgreens
Garnier Fructis Hair Care

$1.00 off -- there have been several cpns including from this past weekends
$2.00 easy saver cpn (pg 18)
RR--0
$2.99 -$2.00Easy saver cpn-$1.00 cpn= -.01

Walgreens also has some good deals after RR (register rewards--like ECBs in that you use them like cash on your next visit)

Advil PM 16 ct. liqui-gels or 20 ct. caplets
Sale 4.49 - RR $2.00 = Like paying $2.49
--this can be $.49 if you have the $2.00 cpn that came out in the 3/8 cpns

Colgate Total Advanced Toothpaste
Sale $3.49
ES cpn $2.50 (pg 23)
$3.49 - $2.50 es cpn = .99
--this deal can be better if you find the $1.50 cpn that is out--I could not find it in my cpn book, but I am told it is out there. With the extra cpn, it becomes a MM (money maker) just be sure you have a filler

Good Deals this Week

I am being a real bum this week. With only having one car (and the one we have is not that great on gas) I did not go out and buy any Sunday Papers. There were no new coupons in this weeks paper, so I opted to save my money until there were coupons so then maybe I can get an extra paper.

So I am relying on the online Ads for CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid. Here is what I found on first glance. Hope it helps!

CVS
8pk Scott Paper Towels $4.99 (Sunday and Monday only)
Kraft EasyMac 5 for $5.00
Xtra Laundry Detergent $1.99
Colgate 4oz Toothpaste $2.99 Free after Extra Bux Reward of $2.99

Walgreens
Selected Varieties Kellogg's Cereal 4/$10.00 - $3.00 Register Reward (for next purchace) = 4/$7.00
Sun-Maid Raisins $1.99 ea

Rite Aid
BOGO
Coolgate
Revlon
Planters
Excedrin

If there are any particular products that you are interested in, please let me know, then when I see it on special, I can let you know.

Admitting my problem

Most folks have one something that they do that makes them really happy. Mine used to be buying purses. Handbags of any shape or size, it really didn't matter, as long as it was a new purse. My husband lovingly refers to me as the Emelda Marcos of handbags. My particular favorites were Betty Boop purses.

I realized today that my happy focus has shifted.

I stopped by the gas station, with my $10 to put gas in the car. Then I began to think, "Hey, if I put $6 in the tank that will get me enough to make it and leave me $4 that I can go to CVS with....and I have my 4ECBs with me, so I have $8 to spend."

My happy focus has shifted to couponing and spending my RR or ECBs. I have found that I have to go by CVS or Walgreens at least once a week. Sometimes I have to go more than once. I just have to.

Now, is this really a problem? I mean I am saving money, and I am getting products that we do use and need. Is it so bad that I feel that I have to go?

I have seen posts from other couponers who are have totally stocked their homes with products that they have gotten through couponing. I remember this one lady who lets her family members come and go 'shopping' through her pantry. I have read about others who donate items they have that they just have too much of. I am not quite to that point, but that is my goal.

For the record (and my husband's benefit--because I know he is going to read this) I have not bought a new purse since last March while we were on spring break in Florida.

Be sure to check my next blog -- Stockpiling 101

My trip to Walgreens

OK, so I have to brag a little.

My husbands job only pays once a month and on the last day of the month. December is the only exception, and then they pay on or around the 15th. So this means we go 6 weeks between paychecks. Planning in January is very important to us. With that being said, to say funds are tight right now is an understatement. All of my stocking in November and December is paying off for us right now.

Last week I had to get one of my meds filled, so I used a transfer coupon to get a $25 gift card from Walgreens. So I have been planning this trip for a few days (with the ad sneak peaks on HCW). There are some really great deals this week at Walgreens.

First trip ( yep this one was done in 3 stages)
8 jars of Ragu for $1.99 ea
1 Double box of Kelloggs cereal $5.99
2 boxes of Jiffy Pancake mix (in case it does snow) $.89 ea
2 6pk of Ramen Noodles $1.39 ea

Just for fun I added everything up, if I had bought everything here using just the store sales and no coupons it would have been $45.53 with tax.

Every time I get discouraged and start thinking that this couponing just isn't worth the time or effort, I get to do something like this and it renews my drive!!
