Harris Teeter is Tripling starting on the 18th

So, the rumors are true! Harris Teeter is tripling starting the 18th. I have had this confirmed by a couple of sources including a friend who works for Harris Teeter.

All I can say is WOO HOO!!!

With that being said, I am looking for deal matc-ups that I can post for freebies or nearly frees. My hope is to hit some of the freebies myself. This week is a good one for coupons that will triple, so grab a couple of papers today.

Happy Couponing!

Why Stockpile

Stockpiling is building up your supply of items that you and your family use regularly.

Your ultimate goal is to stock pile by using coupons and sales to get the very best deal, and ultimately get the items for free, or at least as little out of pocket expense as possible. By doing this you ensure that you have enough items on hand to last until that item goes on sale again, and/or a coupon comes out for it.

As a rule, the sales cycles tend to run every 4 to 6 weeks. So if your favorite tooth paste is on sale this week, and with your coupons you get it free then you need to make sure that you have enough to last you and your family until the sale comes around again so you can stock up for the next cycle. In some cases this may be just one of that item, or you may need to keep several on hand, only time will tell.

Stockpiling does not happen over night!

It will take on average 6 to 12 weeks to build your stockpile. The best tip I have found, “Set aside a certain amount each month, use it until it is gone for just stock items.” For me, I use my ECBs and RRs to be able to extend my ‘stocking’ $$. By using ECBs and RRs, and planning very carefully, I can continue ‘stocking’ all month long.

Each bottle of shampoo (that none of which have I paid more than $0.50--most of which has been free), each tube of tooth paste (most of which has been free) and container of dish detergent (none of which have I paid more than $0.50 ea. for) represents anywhere from $1.99 to $4.00 that I have not had to spend, which in turn has been put back into my food budget--allowing me to stock up there as well. We have also been able to start saving for a stand up freezer which will allow us even more opportunities to stock up.

Our goal, is to have enough food and staple items stocked in our home to last us 4 to 6 weeks with out having to buy anything except perishable items (Milk, Bread, fresh Fruits and Vegetables).

Building a Stockpile List - and how to use it

You will find that your staples list and your stock pile will work hand in hand. As you are making your Staples list (the items that you and your family use regularly), be sure to note if there are name brand items that you prefer to buy (due to allergies, or just because you like them better) as opposed to the off brands. With your staples list in hand, you will find yourself scouring the Sunday sales fliers looking for those items and seeing who has the best deal.

Your staples list will also be the starting point of your price comparison book. A price comparison book is a notebook or tablet that has your list of Staple items on it, along with the regular prices of those items from the stores where you shop most of the time. With this price book, you will easily be able to see where your best deals are for the everyday prices, and where your best sale price is.

Here is a very rough example:

On 7/1 xyz product is on sale for 3.50 at CVS, and 4.00 at Harris Teeter you have a .60 cpn for xyz product, and it is triples weekend at Harris Teeter

Walmart 32 oz. size
Reg Price 3.79
Sale Price n/a
Coupon -0.60
OPP 3.79 (.12 per ounce)

CVS 32 oz. size
Reg Price 3.89
Sale Price 3.50
Coupon -0.60
OPP 2.90 (.09 per ounce)

Ingles 16 oz. size
Reg Price 4.09
Sale Price n/a
Coupon -0.60
OPP 3.49 (.21 per ounce)

Walgreens 32 oz. size
Reg Price 3.99
Sale Price n/a
Coupon -0.60
OPP 3.39 (.11 per ounce)

Harris Teeter 16 oz. size
Reg Price 4.29
Sale Price 4.00
Coupon - 1.80
OPP 2.20 (.13 per ounce)

So by looking at your price book, you know that with Triples this week at Harris Teeter your best price is there.

Make sure that you are listing the prices of the like items, so you will have multiple listings for products that have different sizes.

Having this book also allows you to be able to see which sale has the best price per unit.

Price divided by the number of units (lbs, oz), so while the Harris Teeter is the best out of pocket price, the best price per ounce is CVS.

Stockpiling -- What to stockpile?

Stockpile items that you know you and your family will use every day. Some of the most common items are:

Household Items
Toilet Paper
Paper Towels
Soap--hand soap (pump)
--dish soap
--Bar soap
Laundry Detergent
Diapers (you may want to buy larger sizes as well as the size you currently need)Baby Wipes
Toothpaste
Toothbrushes
Cleaning Agents
Razors
Zip Lock Bags
Shaving Cream
Deodorant
Hair Styling Products
Shampoo
Garbage Bags
Feminine Products

Food Items
Pastas
Rice
Canned Items--Soups
--Spaghetti Sauce
--Veggies
--Meats (tuna and/or chicken)
Boxed Meals
Formula/Baby Food
Rice/Soy Milk
Drink Mixes or Fruit Juices

Obviously you are not going to be stockpiling Diapers, formula and baby food if you don’t have a baby or children, so this is just a starter list of items that you may want to consider. I am sure I have missed items that really should be on this list.

Your ultimate goal is to stock pile by using coupons and sales to get the very best deal, and ultimately get the items for free, or at least as little out of pocket expence as possible.

Stockpiling 101

Repost from a while ago....hope this helps

The concept of a stockpile seems to be getting a bit lost in translation, and I thought I would take this opportunity to clear up the concept.

The first thing that you need to know is that building a stockpile should not negatively affect your budget!

The whole concept is one of savings! Do not neglect the overall savings in favor of stocking up on individual items.

If the current hot deal is for something that you will not use a lot of, exercise some restraint and look for the deals on things that your family uses every week. Don't end up paying full price for everything else because you spent all of your time and energy getting 20 widgets that you won't use for 2 months or more.

What is a stockpile, anyway?

A stockpile is, in its most basic form, having a backup for every item that you use on a regular basis. It's not something that you go out and buy all at once, and say "Voila! I have a stockpile!" OK, technically, yeah. You could do it that way, but where are the savings?

A stockpile is built one item at a time, not bought.

Let's take as an example a generic Hot Coupon Newbie.

They have read through the Couponing 101 thread, and have grasped the concept that they need multiple coupons. They have gotten them into their hot little hands. Now what?

Hot Coupon Newbie has a cat. The cat needs cat litter. From reading the boards, HCN knows that Tidy Cats litter will be on sale at Stop & Shop for $1 a 10 lb bag this week. HCN looks in the coupon file, and has 10 x $1.00/1 coupons for litter. They get all 10 bags free after coupons!

This is HCNs very first stockpile item! It may be the ONLY item added to their stockpile this week, but the stockpile has been born!

Next week, HCN sees that Campbell's Select Soup is on sale 4/5.00 or $1.25 each. They have 12 x $.50/1 coupons in hand that their store will double. This makes each can (normally $2.39 each) only $.25 each that week. HCN buys 12 with coupons, spending $3.00 for $28.68 worth of soup and adding item #2 to their stockpile.

The third week, HCN may not find anything worthy of their newly established stockpile! They just use coupons for the things they actually need to buy that week, and still save 50% or more, which is just fine.

The fourth week is a bonanza! There is a deal on cereal at thier store. The Post cereals are on sale at $1.50 a box, our newbie has $1.00/2 coupons, and there is a rebate! HCN spends $15.00 on 10 boxes of cereal, uses 5 x $1.00/2 coupons, and brings the cost down to $10.00. They then send off for the $10.00 rebate, making all 10 boxes free! Another stockpile item! AND another store has Mahatma rice packages on sale for $.50 each. Our newbie has coupons for $.50/2 that double, and they have 20 coupons. This translates into 40 packs of rice for nothing, and adds item #4 to the stockpile.

There is no reason that you need to start stockpiling flat-out, no holds barred. If you have budget constraints, which you are likely to if you want to coupon in the first place, start out by designating $20.00 a month toward your stockpile. When that's gone, you only go after the things that you can get for free.

Many of the hard core couponers will tell you-- it takes between 6 and 9 months to get a stockpile established and on its way to being self-sustaining. Even then, you sometimes miscalculate and run out of things.

How do I know how much of something to stockpile?

Family Usage: To begin with, figure out how large a supply you want to have on hand-- 3 months? 6 months? A year? Then, determine how much of a given item your family uses each week or month.

EX: Family goes through 2 boxes of cereal each week. You want a 6 month cereal supply on hand. Six months = 26 weeks x 2 boxes/week= 52 boxes of cereal.

Unless is is a spectacular deal (like free), you will not buy all 52 boxes in one week! Build up to 52. Ten one week, and 15 the next time there is a cereal deal.

Things go on sale at regular intervals, which helps you to determine how much of any given item to have on hand. If you can't store a year's worth of cereal at one time, figure out how many boxes it will take to tide you over until the next time there will be fantastic cereal sales and rebates!

Stockpiling is an ongoing process, not an end in itself.

Just because you got free cat litter doesn't mean you will pass up the next Tidy Cats sale. You are never "finished" with a stockpile, because as soon as you get a full supply of one item, you will run low on another.

For some reason it seems there are always some items you can never find a good enough deal on to stockpile. One example is paper towels. For some reason, one of our hard-core couponers has not found a really good deal on paper towels in years. She never has more than a 6pk of them in the house.

Brand loyalty is another reason that the stockpiling process may be off kilter. Although brand loyalty is a rare thing among couponers, for some things you just won't compromise! You may overbuy by normal standards if you know it's the only brand that you will use, and it doesn't often go on sale.

Don't consider the ultra-mega-monster packs of something from Sam's or Costco a "stockpile"!

90% of the time, purchasing in bulk at a warehouse store is not the least expensive option. Don't buy to stockpile from one, except for things you really can't get great deals for on a regular basis. Even then, don't buy at stockpile levels, just buy a big enough pack to get you through until you DO find the super deal elsewhere.

A few things are really inexpensive there, but quite a few things are just "cheaper than regular price" and are just tide-you-over buys, and are not stockpile-worthy.

Keeping control of your stockpile! Control?

What? Why would you want to do something crazy like that! I can get 200 of them for free! I'll take all I can get.
There are several reasons to keep a handle on the ol' stockpile.

1. Space: Don't let your stockpile take over. Sacrificing the comfort of your family and making daily life difficult is not the goal of a stockpile. If things get uncomfortable, you have probably bought too much.

2. Safety and Expiration Dates: We have threads on the expiration dates of various products. A deal isn't a deal unless you are actually going to use the item before it spoils. Ask yourself how much of a product your family can reasonably use in a given time frame, and STOP when you have that amount.

3. Nomadic Lifestyle: This applies most to military families, but also certain other careers where frequent moves are necessary.

Not only do they have weight limits for how much you can move, but the moving companies also have restrictions on what you can move. No perishables, since containers can be in storage for 6 months to a year. Nothing flammable. No cleaning supplies. No batteries, etc. You can see that it can get very expensive to get rid of a large stockpile of these items.

The best way to stockpile in the military is to have a 3 to 6 month supply of items, instead of the 1 to 2 year supply a non-military family might have.

Learning a new language

Since I started couponing, I have discovered a whole new language. The language of couponing. It only took a few moments of reading posts on Hot Coupon World for me to get totally lost and confused. The more I tried, the more lost I got. Then I decided to see if there was a guide to this new language. Sure enough, there is a section for "newbies" and how to read this new language. I now have a copy of this list on my desktop so if I get stumped, I can refer to it. These abbreviations are widely used on most of the couponing websites. My pride and joy

I wanted to share my pride and joy........My son!

He went with me while I was picking up some items at the store. I had some items I was looking at, checking prices mostly, and as I looked up there was my son looking through my coupon book. When I first asked him to carry my book into the store you could see him shaking his head and looking at me like I was crazy. Now he was earnestly trying to find deals with me. He debated with me as to which of the items I was looking at was truly the best deal, and I watched as the understanding clicked. Then he discovered my Gatorade coupon from 5/1, and he got really excited. I had him checking prices and telling me what the best deals were, and then I let him get the items to redeem the coupon.

I have always hoped he would pick up and get interested in couponing. He loves to clip my coupons when he has time to sit down and do so. My hope as I have stated before was that he could learn some of these tricks so that when he goes to college and all his buddies are scraping pennies together to eat Top Ramen, he will be eating much better by using coupons.

To Clip or Not to Clip

That is the question.

With the new TLC show you get to see various ways others store and arrange their coupons. From the envelope stuffed with coupons to the notebooks. You have to wonder which is the best way. As with anything it is all personal preference and a massive amount of trial and error.

I have tried the envelope method. This was years ago when my husband and I were first married. I could never find the coupon I knew was in there, and always ended up missing a deal. I quickly got frustrated and ended up quitting couponing.

When I took my couponing class, our instructor showed us her coupon book and I decided if I was going to really make a go at this couponing thing, that was what I was going to do. I love my coupon book, and have threatened bodily harm before. Messing with that book is like messing with a woman's purse, you just don't do it.

Now my dilemma is do I clip all the coupons I get each Sunday or is there a better way? Watching TLC I have seen several couponers who store their circulars by the week and only clip the coupons for the deals they are going after that week.

This method is looking really good to me as I have upped the number of papers I am buying each week to 5 ( 3 Charlotte and 2 Asheville). The thought of sitting and trimming all those coupons is a daunting task. But so far, only clipping and sorting 1 set of circulars seems to be working well. I will keep you posted on how it is going.

Couponing Sites

I started couponing back in November of 08. I saw an interview with a lady who by using coupons feeds her family on $10 to $20 per week. I decided that I wanted to learn more. I started looking for tips and suggestions on the internet. Boy did I find lots of information. I found this one particular website for a lady from here in North Carolina who teaches a class on couponing. I signed up and traveled to Apex to take her class. I have not turned back since. I can not say that I have reached the $10 to $20 per week goal yet, but I have been able to cut a great deal from our food budget. As I get time I will blog more about couponing, but for now here is a list of the websites that I check regularly.

Hot Coupon World --here other couponers will list deals they have found at different stores. I love this site because I can find where the best deals are.

SavvyDollar --this site is very much like HCW, but it is more for deals in the North Carolina area.

Smart Spending Resources --this lady is a genious. I went to her and took her class and WOW is all that I can say. I learned so much from her class, and I am looking at taking it again now that I have been doing this a while to pick up on the things that I missed the first time. She also has a really good list of links on her 'Resources' page. (most of my links you will find on her list--Thanks Faye)

Taylortown Coupon Preview --this is a great site! Each Thursday evening or Friday they post a list of the coupons that will be coming in the Sunday paper that week. By knowing what is coming out, then I can plan if I need to buy an extra paper that week for a certain coupon.

Coupon.com --a great resource for printable coupons. You can print just the coupons you want, or all of them. These seem to change each month, but sometimes they will change during the month (I think it is when the print limit is reached--but that is just my guess)

Couponmom.com --another source for printable coupons and usually these are different from the coupon.com list.

CVS - Everything you need to know

Learn how to shop at CVS like a pro. Here is CVS’s coupon policy and how to use the CVS Pharmacy Extra Care Bucks to rock those deals!

CVS Coupon Policy: CVS stores accept the following types of coupons:

1.Manufacturer Coupons (this includes both coupons from newspapers / magazines / other print sources ans well as manufacturer online printable coupons)

2.Store Coupons (this includes CVS store coupons found in their weekly fliers, in-store coupon booklets, CRTs and purchase based coupons)

3.Competitor Pharmacy Coupons (they do not, however, accept any other type of competitor coupon)

4.Extra Care Bucks (called ECBs for short, they are like a Catalina from the grocery store that is printed out at the cash register on the bottom of your receipt)

CVS Lingo:

Extra Care Bucks (ECBs): It’s a CVS store coupon for a discount of your next purchase order that prints at check out. They print at the bottom of your receipt and can be used “like cash” on almost anything else sold at CVS (excludes gift card purchases, alcohol, prescriptions).

Extra Care Bucks card: Card that will track your ECB’s and rewards. You must scan this before your transactions to get your ECB’s. Apply for the free Extra Care Bucks card online or in-stores.

Reinventing Beauty Magazine: This is a is a 99 cent magazine available in the beauty section of most CVS stores. It sometimes comes with CVS and manufacturer coupons. Where else can you find the magazine? by the weekly flyers, with the other magazines, by the cash registers, in the cosmetic aisle. Not all stores seem to carry this magazine.

Clip Free Coupon: Refers to a month long discount offered that’s deducted automatically at checkout.

CRT: or Cash register tape is a coupon that prints at the bottom of your receipt or at the Price Scanner.

Price Scanner: Price scanning machines located at certain stores that serve to check the price of items and also print CVS store coupons when you CVS Extra Care Bucks card is used.

CVS Store coupons: These can be stacked with manufacturer coupons for added savings. Can only use one per transaction.

CVS $/$$ coupons: These coupons provide a discount once your order reaches a certain value before coupons. For example: you could save $4 when you buy $20 or more. This total is always before any other coupons.

Order of handing coupons to the cashier: First hand CVS dollar off transaction coupons, then CVS store coupons/manufacturer coupons, and finally your ECBs.

Checking out of WalMart the other night (picking up my Free body wash) I noticed a guy with a 10 or 15 body wash bottles. Now I am all about the free stuff, and building a stock pile, but is cleaning out a shelf really necessary? I mean I had to go to three WalMarts to find the Nivea to be able to use my 2 coupons. No I did not get the last two bottles.

Now for what really drives me crazy. The last couple of times I frequented the local flea market, I walked by table after table of Free with coupon items. I am all about using free items to help out with expences for the family but to go out and then try to sell it? It really gets to me when I see the items that I had to go to several stores to find at all to USE in my own household.

If anyone ever sees me selling any of the items I have used coupons to get free, you have the OK to chew me out.

So what do you do with the items if you get too many? Like I said in my previous post, donate them. Local shelters and food banks can put them to good use. There is also the Red Cross. Folks who have lost everthing to fire or disaster can benefit too.

Using coupons to benefit your household is one thing, but using coupons and then reselling for your own financial gain.........is in my opinion............WRONG!

Not promising anything

With the new TLC show Extreme Couponing (Wednesday nights on TLC at 9 and 9:30 pm), couponing has been the topic of conversation several times over the past couple of weeks. I have been getting, and clipping coupons for a while, but I have not been sorting or using them like I should. Or to put it out there, I have been wasting my time and money. Not anymore. It only takes scoring a freebie or two to get my couponing blood flowing! Free Nivea body wash last night did it (4-17 coupon for $3 off Nivea body wash -- free at WalMart after cpn)!

Extreme Couponing has been really great about showing the stock piles the featured couponers have built up. While I understand some of their stock piles, Yes, even I have a hard time explaining the thousands of tubes of tooth paste the one guy had. Stockpiling is getting and having extras on hand of those items that you need in a household. Paper towels, bath room tissue and cleaning supplies. Items that you would pay full price for if you stopped at the store for at the last minute. I mean honestly, how many times have you called your husband/wife/room mate and said "pick up some toilet paper on your way home". I am honest, I have done it.

Moderation is the key. Once you get a comfortable amount (of course my comfortable amount may be different from someone elses......I know) you stop. Or you donate. Food banks love food donations, but they have need for paper and cleaning procducts too. Or share with friends and family who dont coupon. "Pass It On" or "Pay It Forward" for lack of another way of putting it.

The nice things about stock piles is they will get you through tough times. My stock pile of 14 bottles of shampoo.........well we opened the last bottle of my stock pile last week. 2 yrs, not too bad.

Sunday afternoons and Monday nights are my scheduled couponing deal research time. Like a job, because this will pay me in the long run. I will be posting deals as I find them. Hope they helps others as well!

Happy Couponing

Re-Post from a while ago
