A great website for those garden veggies you are wanting to 'put up'

As a kid, I can remember spending the summer with my Grandmother, working in her garden in the morning, and then preparing all the veggies to be saved for later use. My favorite had to be the green beans. Stringing them and snapping them, to this day, I still love it. But as a child ( I started spending the summers with her when I was 6) I did not pay close enough attention as to how she did all those things. I regret that today. I remember canning tomatoes, green beans, pickles, and freezing green beans, peaches and squash. I just cant remember all the steps involved with doing any of those things now. Sadly my Grandmother has passed, so I do not have her to turn to now.

So, when given a bag of garden fresh green beans, I turned to the Web. I found a really cool site called PickYourOwn.org. This site covers freezing, and canning as well as almost anything else you would want to know. They even include as you go photos.

I am proud to say, I have frozen 15 cups of green beans, vacuum sealed in 2 cup packages (one had 3 cups). I plan on going by the farmers market this weekend and see if I cant get some more green beans to put up for the winter. My boys love green beans.

Sadly I have fallen off the wagon.

Yes it is true, but I am trying to change things and get back on track. I have fallen off of the couponing wagon.

I can give all the excuses, since vacation I have chased my family around and just not had time to do or think of anything else. I have not felt like sorting and filing my coupons. Basically, blah blah blah blah!

As a testament to my previous stocking, even with taking items to leave at the beach, we have not run out of anything (except ground turkey meat--no coupons for that). Granted I am getting low on shampoo, and tooth paste, and a few other items, but we have yet to run out of anything. And to my credit (**pat me on the back) I have been stocking up on vegetables that I have frozen for the winter.

Here is to my renewed energy to get back on the couponing wagon. This past Thursday during Project Runway, I have sorted and filed my coupons. I will be back on track for today's coupons (and there are a bunch of them!)

Wish me luck!

Time to link your Ingle's Advantage Card

As a parent of a school aged child, and in the current economic environment we are in, I have come to appreciate the programs offered to help local schools. Ingle's has one of those programs linked to their Ingle's Advantage cards called Tools for Schools.

I wish I could give you dollar amounts that the schools have gotten through this program, but I thought about this too late, and all of the stats have been reset for the new school year.

I encourage everyone to link to a school, even if you don't have a school aged child. It is truly amazing to me that any state would make any cuts to our education budget, but sadly that seems to be the first place they look to cut. ----Sorry, that is a sticky subject, and one that is not for this blog---

I am proud to say that I have a Son at Apple Valley Middle School, and their ID is 11020. I know they would appreciate any and all support.

Good deal at a Car Wash

My family was able to take advantage of the CARS program (Cash for Clunkers), and we are now the proud owners of a 2009 Nissan Versa. With as much as we drive we are already saving money on gas, going from 12 mpg, to 30 mpg has made a big difference.

Part of having a new car, is keeping it clean inside and out. This past Saturday we tried a new car wash on Airport Road, at my sons suggestion. Gorilla Car Wash was quite nice. Their prices range from $3 to $12 for the wash, and they offer a 24 hr rain guarantee. The best part for us happened to be the FREE vacuums. Yes FREE vacuums for their customers.

My only complaint (and it is more MY issue, not theirs) was that it is NOT a laser wash (or touch free wash). They do have the heavy fabric washing apparatus. I would have preferred a laser wash, just because I don't want anything touching the paint and scratching it up. Shoot me, it is my very first totally NEW car. I will say that my car was clean and sparkling when it was all said and done. Inside and out!

**The Gorilla Car Wash website only lists the Patton Ave. location, but I called and it is the same company for both locations. The gentleman I talked to told me they are fixing to upgrade their website, and also told me of a new special, look for that in an upcoming blog.

Summertime fun

Well, to say it has been a whirlwind couple of weeks would be an understatement.

Since coming back from vacation we have been busier that ever before. As I had posted earlier, my son earned his Life rank in Boy Scouts. He is now waiting on the new paperwork before getting started on his Eagle rank. To say his dad and I are super proud just doesn't do it justice.

Sometimes I feel like I have not had the time to turn around much less do very much with coupons. Once school goes back in, I hope that things will slow down just a bit.
